How Car Ignition Systems Work

Your car ignition system has three key parts: the spark plugs, the ignition coil, and the distributor cap. These parts work together to create a spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture in your engine, which is what makes your car run. Here's a closer look at each part:

Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are small devices that create a spark of electricity. This spark ignites your engine's air/fuel mixture, causing it to run. Over time, spark plugs can become damaged, which can cause your car to misfire, or experience decreased performance. Depending on your driving habits and vehicle type, spark plugs usually need to be replaced every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

Ignition Coil

The ignition coil is a transformer that increases the voltage of the current from your battery to create a spark strong enough to ignite the air/fuel mixture in your engine. The ignition coil is located between the distributor cap and the spark plugs.

Distributor Cap

The distributor cap is located on top of the distributor. It contains high-tension lead wires that connect to each spark plug in your engine. The distributor cap rotates around as electricity flows through it; this distributes electricity evenly to each cylinder in your engine so that each spark plug fires at the right time. Depending on your vehicle and driving habits, distributor caps typically need to be replaced every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.
